DRUMS
Above pictures are traditional drums used in Piddig. The body is made of solid Narra (Philippine Mahogany) carefully carved to a specific thickness - 1/4 inch for a specific sound. Accordingly, carving would take a month since they do it manually. Th drum face (cover) is made of an aborted calf's skin so it is paper thin and strong. The two strings determine the sound quality depending on its tightness.
Drums were once the only means of drawing crowds during meetings, assemblies and community occassions and public workds. To date, there are only 3 drummers alive using this instrument in Piddig. Drum beats differ when used for drawing crowds and religious pocessions. Some farmer groups (zanjeras) even have their own specific drum beats.
