NOTABLE ILOCANO SPORTS PERSONALITIES by Nobert Soloria Bermosa

1.) Teofilo Yldefonso – Swimming




Teofilo Yldefonso, known as “the Ilocano Shark”, was the first Filipino to win an Olympic medal and the only Filipino to win multiple medals. This Filipino swimmer who specialized in the breaststroke was born in Piddig, Ilocos Norte. Teofilo Yldefonso is the only back-to-back Filipino Olympic medalist. He accomplished this extremely rare feat at the 1928 Amsterdam Summer Olympics and at the 1932 Los Angeles Summer Olympics.






2.) Ambrosio Bibby Padilla – Basketball

Ambrosio Bibby Padilla, a former basketball player, was elected Senator of the Philippines. He was from Lingayen, Pangasinan and was one of the most important figures in the development of Asian basketball.

3.) Danilo Ildefonso – Basketball

Danilo Ildefonso, a popular PBA player who plays for San Miguel Beermen, is from Urdaneta City, Pangasinan.

4.) Carlo Guieb – Cycling

Carlo Guieb is a popular Ilocano cyclist from Nueva Vizcaya. He was the 1993 and 1994 Marlboro Tour champion of the Philippines. This soft-spoken but tough cyclist with great skill in the mountain is from the town of Bagabag.

5.) Janet Belarmino – Mountain Climbing

Janet Belarmino, an Ilocano mountain climber from Nueva Vizcaya. She is one of the trio of first Filipino women to scale Mount Everest.

6.) Sonny Cabatu – Basketball

Sonny Cabatu, a retired PBA player and the father of another PBA player – Junjun Cabatu, was born in Cabugao, Ilocos Sur.

7.) Junjun Cabatu – Basketball

Junjun Cabatu, currently playing for Philippine Patriot and played for Barangay Ginebra Kings, is of Ilocano descent, the son of Sonny Cabatu. His real name is Santiago Cabatu Jr.

8.) Robert Salazar Jaworski – Basketball

Robert Salazar Jaworski, a famous PBA player and a former Philippine senator is of mixed descent – Polish-American and Ilocano. He was born in Baguio City.

9.) Marlou Aquino – Basketball

Marlou Aquino, a popular PBA basketball player, is from Santa Barbara, Pangasinan. He is also known as “The Skyscraper”.

10.) Brian Viloria – Boxing





Brian Viloria is an American professional boxer of Ilocano descent. Viloria is the former IBF Junior Flyweight champion and WBC Light Flyweight champion of the world.

11.) Marietta Tabangin-Magno – Track and Field

Marietta Tabangin-Magno is an athlete who set two Filipino records in athletics – the 1500 m event clocking at 4:24.87 on May 27, 1989 in Changhua, Chinese Taipei and the 3000 m event with a time record of 9:48.5 on April 27, 1990 in Manila, Philippines. Marietta Tabangin and the writer of this article Nobert Soloria Bermosa are both from Cordon, Isabela. They are batch mates although the former studied in a public school while the latter attended a private school.
